3 Books to Boost Your Productivity

Not enough hours in the day? To-do list as long as your arm? We can all benefit from techniques to help us work smarter, below are three of our favourite books on being more productive.

Deep Work by Cal Newport

“Deep Work: Professional activities performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.”

Cal Newport is a professor of computer science at Georgetown University and the author of numerous bestselling books about succeeding in today’s world, so he knows a thing or two about being productive.

This sounds like a heavy read but it really isn’t, it guides the reader through what deep work is, why it's so important and offers practical steps you can implement right away to improve your focus, do more in less time and achieve better results.

(For students, Cal’s blog ‘Study Hacks’ is also well worth checking out)

The Checklist Manifesto: How To Get Things Right by Atul Gawande

“Under conditions of complexity, not only are checklists a help, they are required for success.”

We’re big fans of listmaking at Hunt & Gather and even more so after reading this fascinating book. As well as being a bestselling author, Atul Gawande is a surgeon and professor at Harvard Medical School. In The Checklist Manifesto, he shares the incredible power of the simple checklist in avoiding costly and time-consuming mistakes.

This book makes a compelling case for the huge benefits of utilising checklists through a number of interesting case studies including avoiding errors in surgery and preventing plane rashes. It then explains how to make an effective checklist which can be applied to any tasks in your personal or professional life to reduce mistakes and achieve better results.

The Productivity Project by Chris Bailey

“Productivity isn’t about doing more things - it’s about doing the right things.”

Chris Bailey spent a year learning everything he could about the science behind productivity and carrying out experiments on himself based on what he learned. He has distilled this research into 25 productivity tactics that will have the biggest impact on your life.

Taking a holistic approach to productivity this book discusses the importance of your personal values, how diet and exercise affect how productive you are, eliminating distractions and various time management techniques. Even for seasoned productivity hackers, there’s going to something to help you work smarter that you hadn’t considered before.
